Friendship Ahoy is a Winner!
May 12, 2022

I’m excited to announce that my surface pattern design Friendship Ahoy was a winner in the most recent Spoonflower Design Challenge. The theme for this design challenge was home hobbies, and I decided to create a design based on a hobby that I’ll admit it’s been decades since I’ve engaged in. I’m talking, of course, about making friendship bracelets.

As teens my best friend and I spent hours knotting embroidery floss into pretty friendship bracelets that we mostly exchanged back and forth with one another. Old photos from my friendship bracelet phase show my arm covered with numerous bracelets at any given time.

This particular surface pattern design features a bright assortment of colors with bracelets in shades of magenta, yellow, orange, red, green, white and aqua blue set against a dark navy blue background to really make all those colors pop.

My Friendship Ahoy design is now available on fabric, wallpaper and an assortment of home decor items at Spoonflower.

Huge thanks to everyone who voted for Friendship Ahoy in the Spoonflower challenge and congratulations to all the Home Hobbies winners!

The friendship bracelet tradition holds that the bracelets are to be knotted onto your wrist and worn until the knot comes undone and the bracelet falls off which will guarantee you good luck and a lifelong friendship. But, full disclosure, sometimes those friendship bracelets got so grimy and nasty, that they needed to be cut off long before that knot came undone!

I’m heartened to see that the friendship bracelet continues to this day especially among teen girls. I always enjoyed selecting the perfect color combinations for making my next friendship bracelet masterpiece. In fact, it kind of reminds me a bit of surface pattern design where one needs to come up with the perfect colors for each project.
