Something’s Fishy is a Winner!
Feb 7, 2022

I’m excited to share the news that my surface pattern design Something’s Fishy finished in the top 10 of Spoonflower’s Lilla Rogers Vintage Canned Goods Design Challenge. My design came in eighth out of 581 entries. So, I have to say, I’m pretty psyched.

The goal of this challenge was to design a surface pattern that incorporated a vintage look on the subject of canned goods. So, I decided to focus on a type of canned food that I have NEVER had the desire to eat: tinned fish. Why, you ask? Well, because I thought it would be fun to create some cute illustrations of fish and to come up with some fun fish puns to use as slogans on my imaginary tins of squid and sardines. For the full vintage effect I picked a bright but vintage looking color palette and used some vintage style lettering on my fish tins. Let’s just say, I had a lot of fun making this pattern.

I have to admit I’ve entered quite a few Spoonflower challenges, and this is my first time finishing in the top 10. So, I’m pretty excited about this little victory. I hope it’s also cause for hope for anyone else who like me has been trying to finish in the weekly challenge top 10 or even top 50. Be patient, and keep working on your art because one of these days a challenge that’s right up your alley is going to come along. I never could have guessed that tinned fish would be my winner, but there you go.

I was super impressed with all of the entries in this challenge, and when I take a look at each week’s challenge I’m always blown away by how many talented artists there are out there. You can see all the winning entries in Spoonflower’s Lilla Roger’s Vintage Canned Good Challenge here.
